Monaco’s Sustainable Legacy

The Principality of Monaco remains deeply committed to advancing environmental responsibility within the maritime sector — a mission long championed by H.S.H. Prince Albert II through His Foundation and numerous marine conservation initiatives.

Since establishing the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation in 2006, HSH Prince Albert has led a global effort focused on climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable water management.

Among the Foundation’s core strategies are initiatives spanning the Mediterranean, the Polar regions, and least developed countries, guided by a scientific and ethical framework.

In addition to its philanthropic missions, the Foundation launched in 2023 the ReOcean Fund, a €100 millions private equity fund designed to drive scalable ocean-positive solutions — investing in marine ecosystem restoration, solutions to plastic pollution, sustainable blue food, ocean data and green shipping and yachting.

Federating synergies, the Foundation is actively partnering with international organisations to address ocean’s most insidious challenges among which ocean acidification. An issue that HSH Prince Albert II and his Foundation took up very early on by launching the Monaco declaration in 2009, signed by more than 150 scientists from 26 countries alerting on the dangers of ocean changes.

Under the leadership of HSH Prince Albert II, Monaco was also one of the first European and Mediterranean state to ratify the High Seas Treaty in 2024. Also known as the BBNJ Agreement, i twill now come into force next January 2026 after two decades of negociations. More than 60 countries have ratified the treaty, marking a new step in Ocean protection.

Blue Wake™: Shaping a More Sustainable Future for Yachting

The Blue Wake™ initiative, launched this year by MYS, builds on the success of the Sustainability Hub introduced in 2022. Developed in collaboration with the Water Revolution Foundation, Blue Wake™ aims to enhance the visibility of verified sustainable solutions throughout the show. Only companies and yachts meeting rigorous environmental criteria are granted Blue Wake™ recognition, ensuring that the programme stands for genuine progress rather than tokenism.

“Sustainability has become an essential driver of innovation in yachting,” said Gaëlle Tallarida, Managing Director of the Monaco Yacht Show. “With Blue Wake™, we are reinforcing this commitment by ensuring that sustainability is an integral part of the event experience, engaging all stakeholders in meaningful discussions about the future of our industry.”

Robert van Tol, Executive Director of the Water Revolution Foundation, added: “This initiative is about more than visibility — it’s about credibility. Through a rigorous vetting process, we are ensuring that the solutions presented under Blue Wake™ genuinely contribute to making the yachting industry more sustainable.”

A Step Forward in Responsible Luxury

As one of the yachts highlighted by the Blue Wake™ jury, Maximus embodies the movement toward responsible innovation in superyachting — a segment increasingly defined by efficiency, renewable technologies, and lifecycle-conscious design. Her recognition at the 2025 edition of MYS places her among the leaders of a new generation of yachts that prove luxury and sustainability can coexist.

The 2025 Monaco Yacht Show reaffirms Monaco’s role not only as a center of yachting prestige, but also as a hub for sustainable progress and maritime stewardship.
